Howard’s been a stand-up for over half his life (let’s not go into how long that is) he still performs in stand-up clubs up and down the land, and occasionally abroad. He started out performing stand-up for adults, then, when he started animating, he incorporated his cartoons into his hour-long live shows, creating Little Howard.

Howard’s first hour long show featuring both himself and his animated six-year-old alter-ego Little Howard was a total sell-out, garnering rave reviews and his second was the only nominee from the UK for the 2003 Edinburgh Comedy Award (then called The Perrier Award). He took the show to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, did a one week residency in New York and performed at The Aspen Comedy Festival, appearing on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Back at home he got a development deal with Tiger Aspect and got booked to perform on The Royal Variety Performance alongside Bon Jovi and Joan Rivers! Jimmy Tarbuck (also appearing, and sharing dressing room) said “You smashed that lad” and Michael Ball said (dressed as Mrs Turnblatt from Hairspray) said “Fabulous! Outrageous, but fabulous!”. I stood between him (as her) and Enrique Iglesias (much taller than you’d expect). The press took a photo of me shaking hands with the Queen. I blinked, but wasn’t famous enough to warrant another second press of the shutter.

Among all this success Howard had a problem. Having a big blinky-eyed cartoon boy in your show tends to mean there are kids in the queues to get into it. After turning the kids away for three years it occurred to him that there were only three jokes that would be rated over PG, and if he removed those…

Howard starting performing for kids, joining the regular contributors to Comedy Club 4 Kids (who have just, deservedly been awarded the Victoria Wood Panel Prize at the 2025 Edinburgh Comedy Awards), he then started performing hour-long live shows for a family audience with Little Howard, the first of which (Little Howard And The Magic Pencil Of Life And Death won the Best Children’s Show Award at the Buxton Fringe and was long-listed for The Edinburgh Comedy Award.

Soon TV came knocking and CBBC invited Howard to develop a factual comedy show, which turned into Little Howard’s Big Question and ran for three series and won the Best Children’s Script Award at the 2011 Writer’s Guild Awards.

Throughout this time Howard continued touring his shows for adults and families, and continued working as a stand-up appearing on The World Stands Up (Paramount Comedy), 28 Acts in 28 Minutes (BBC 3), Life, An Idiot’s Guide (Radio 4). He performed stand-up in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Iceland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Hong Kong, China and the United Arab Emirates, and played clubs up and down the country back home.

In recent years, as his writing work has started to take-over Howard gigs less, but has kept up his residency as the long-running emcee of Screaming Blue Murder Comedy at The Dorking Halls (he’s practically a celebrity there, he even has a catchphrase!), does fun gigs that don’t require too much travelling, and will always turn up to perform for Comedy Club 4 Kids if they want him.

Howard’s daughter Mabel has also started performing stand-up recently and is starting to gig more regularly than Howard.
